Andrew Nolan
I have been working with ceramic for sixteen years. I joined the Hokitika Craft Gallery in 1995.
My aesthetic is based upon a concern with form, space and an evocation of the natural environment. Due to the fusion of glaze and clay body at high temperature, I use eastern glazes and a reduction atmosphere to bring the subtle depth of colour.
I describe my ceramics, in the terms of acting as “the most suitable carrier of my ideas and visions”.
I discuss my work in terms of both potters and painters, making references European artists Salvador Dali, Joan Miro , France Mihelic and writings of David Smith. .
A quote that best sums up the way I feel towards my work:
“A work dissolves into my universe then evolves back into yours." - David Smith
