The Raku process involves firing a decorated copper glazed piece up to around 1000 degrees then removing it, while glowing red from the kiln and placed into combustible material such as paper or saw dust. The material ignites on contact and surrounds the piece in flame, at the precise moment a dram is lowered over the blaze which cuts out the oxygen and reacts with the copper glaze and creates beautiful colours and patterns.
